How to update your home for free.
I’ve recently moved into a new home. It’s been hard work, but so rewarding to set up my belongings in a new space, and to admire them in a different setting. It makes everything look so interesting and new and fresh.
On the flip side, I’ve had to do a bit of furniture shopping, and have been frequenting home stores. They’re all advertising madly to ‘update your home’ and ‘refresh your space’. That’s cool, but we are all feeling the pinch at the moment- so the money for non-essential home aspects is reduced.
How can you refresh your home without breaking the bank, and shopping up a storm?
See your home with fresh eyes.
It’s what I do as a Professional Organiser. I can come into your home and see it objectively- the furniture you aren’t using, or organisation that might actually not make sense. We live in our homes and begin to… ignore; and live around the things in it.
Here’s a task you can do right now.
Imagine your home becomes an Airbnb. If someone new came into your home, and had to live there as it is right now- would it make sense? Would it be a pleasant place to be?
What would you get fixed for your guests? How would you objectively make your home look and feel great to be in?
Make a list.
(Putting curtains up in the spare room and fixing the powerless power point in the hallway would have to be on my list!)
Look around. How long has that painting been on the wall? Do you even LIKE it? Can you swap it with the one in the bedroom?
Can the books live on a different shelf, or even in a different configuration? Same with your knick knacks on the dressing table. Do you swap the cushion that usually lives on your bed (let’s be honest- the floor next to your bed) for one on the couch?
Be a curator. Rotate items around your home and enjoy how different the same objects can look in a new space.
There you go- it’s like shopping in your own home, and you don’t need to spend a dollar!
